Parents around the area have been disappointed to hear that Beginnings Early Childhood Centre, the day nursery on Seymour Place, is to close. The nursery has been one of the few day nurseries in the Marylebone area catering to full-time working parents and this sudden announcement has taken everyone by surprise. Many parents are finding themselves in a situation where they are scrambling to find alternative childcare in a few months.
There are a few alternatives that spring to mind.
The Merchant Square Day Nursery is a new nursery just off Edgware Rd and Praed Street. Details can be found on our Nurseries page here
The Hyde Park Nursery, and its sister nursery the Marylebone Village Nursery have also been in touch with the following message:
"We hear a few mums are in a panic over the latest news of closure of the Beginnings. As a mum who this has happened to before I know what this feels like a tailspin... however I have a newly opened nursery school on Craven terrace in Hyde park are that can offer parents full day support and marylebone village nursery school has a few day spots available."
(for those who do not know, the Marylebone Village Nursery shut down a few years ago, leaving parents in the lurch including Frances, who went on to purchase and re-open the nursery)
Details about the nurseries are below, though you may be aware that Marylebone Village is only a short day but the Hyde Park nursery is a full day nursery.
The Marylebone Hotel is hosting a children's afternoon tea this week.
It is going to be an interactive performance by the students at the National Youth Theatre for about 20-25 minutes, telling the story of The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson.
Parents and children then can enjoy an afternoon tea in 108 Pantry. The suitable age group is 4-10 years.
We have organised a weekend Meet and Play session for this Saturday 21st February at 10.30am at the request of a local mum - a great idea so that the working mums and dads can meet up too!
Come and meet other local parents while your little ones play in Paddington Street Gardens Playground. We have arranged to meet around the picnic tables in the play area. I will try and bring along some Marylebone Mums flyers to put on the table so you now I'm there! Bring your own coffee :)
Of course this is weather permitting so please follow us on Twitter or join the Marylebone Mums Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/marylebonemums/ as I will update there if the event is cancelled due to weather.
Hope to see you there!
I was recently sent information about about Babysitters of Kensington and Chelsea, a local babysitting service. After asking around, I found that many people I know, especially in West London, use them and that they don't just cover Kensington and Chelsea!
Many of us use websites such as Sitters to find childcare but having looked into BOKAC, I was really impressed by the way they check their sitters, and also by the website which is very easy to use and has lots of information on each sitter. The real difference is that the founder runs the business and responds to each enquiry individually, providing a personal service. She understands what matters to us when we are looking for a babysitter.
BOKAC sent me some information about their service and recruitment process which may be of interest.
BOKAC enables parents to find, book and manage their babysitting appointments online. Aside from our personal service (I run the business alone and respond to each enquiry individually) we offer the following:
BOKAC has been running since 2011 and we have relied primarily on word of mouth advertising and our existing clients telling their friends and friends of friends etc.
Babysitters apply to register via our website and the initial stage tends to be emails/phone calls back and forth with me to discuss their childcare experience and availability on a basic level. If they seem suitable, each applicant completes our registration forms and provides two references: one from someone they are currently or have recently been employed by and one from someone they currently or have recently babysat for. I follow up on these references personally to verify the information. After this, I arrange to interview each babysitter where we meet for about 30minutes to discuss their childcare experience in more depth (I present them with a range of scenarios to find out how they would react in various situations) and to make sure they would represent BOKAC to a high standard. After this, they are able to complete their online profiles which can be viewed here: http://bokac.co.uk/our-babysitters
Our babysitters are often also already working with children in another capacity whether that be teaching as a profession, tutoring, art/acting/dance classes, sports tuition etc.
If you would like any more information, there is a great FAQ page on the BOKAC website and I am sure they would be happy to answer any additional questions.

Vesna at Sing and Sign is hoping to start NEW Sing and Sign Babes classes in Marylebone. If there is enough interest 5 weeks long classes will be held on Mondays at 2:45 starting hopefully on the 9th February in Rudolf Steiner House 35 Park Road, NW1 6XT (Eurythmy room on the third floor).
These classes are for babies from 2 months and five week long terms are £45.
'Babes' is a gentle music and sensory class that aims to build the framework for good communication through our magic ingredient... music! The 'Babes' classes incorporate some sensory stimulation along with our Sing and Sign staple ingredients - repetition, anticipation, praise and, of course Jessie Cat, as well as some basic signing. This format has been specifically designed with the help of a fantastic Speech and Language Therapist (Queen's Award) and is for younger babies who are pre-Stage 1. It is only suitable for babies who are not yet crawling (rolling over or sitting up is fine).
In the price included is the Jessie Cat's own Songbook ideal for parents new to our Babes Curriculum.
Alongside the CD to accompany all the pictures in the book is an additional CD, containing more new material.
This CD is unique, in that after many of the songs have been sung through there follows a verse with accompaniment for the parent or carer, to sing or say the rhyme your own way.
Please get in touch with her if you are interested.
